Program FAQ

Horsemanship: the skills, knowledge, and understanding needed to form a harmonious relationship with a horse

Who should participate in horsemanship programs?

Our Horsemanship programs are ideal for those with little to no experience with horses. It is also great for those with some riding experience who want to enhance their skills and understanding of equine management and share their love of horses with friends.

Our current programs are designed for youth in grades K-12, but if you are outside of the K-12 age range or have unique physical needs, contact us to learn about our other upcoming programs and find one that is right for you.

What should participants wear to the stables?

Students will spend club time at the stable, so wear clothes that can get dirty. We also require students wear long pants and closed-toed shoes with a hard sole and small heel, boots preferred (rain boots are OK).

What equipment do we need to purchase?

NONE! Other than proper footwear (see above), we will provide sterilized helmets for riding and all other equipment and supplies. If your student has an ASTM/SEI approved riding helmet, they can bring it for their personal use.

Does horsemanship include riding?

The main focus will be learning the skills needed to handle and care for horses on the ground, but there will be opportunities to ride in the final weeks of club. By the end of this session, students will know how to lead a horse through an obstacle course, groom, tack, feed, and perform basic equine care. We also offer extra riding opportunities, such as lessons and, for committed riders, referrals to competitive IEA through our Rising Riders program.

How do we get to the stables?

SPHF is located at Glen Farm Stables (163 Glen Farm Road), directly north of the Newport Polo field. Please park only in the designated parking area. For after school programs, please coordinate carpooling for student to the stables if possible. If you need support with transportation to or from the stables, please contact us.

Is there financial aid?

Yes, our mission is to create access to equine activities. One way we accomplish this is by providing need- based financial assistance through sliding scale fees and financial aid. Please contact us to learn more.

What is the Rising Riders Program?

Through Rising Riders, we aim to connect horse lovers with local equestrian facilities by matching students to the best program for their goals. We may also provide need-based financial assistance and other resources to resolve barriers that limit participation in equestrians activities.

We are currently developing partnerships with several facilities on Aquidneck Island and in Tiverton, and we want to see this network grow! If you are an instructor, trainer, or farm owner interested in becoming involved in our programs, please contact us to learn more about our goals to support the local equestrian industry!
